© Bac Films 2012. Before making the film, I might have hesitated to say I was working on ‘a study of violence’ for fear of sounding too ambitious. But now that it’s finished, I believe that’s what it is: a study of violence in all its forms. It’s there, not only in the bullying. There’s violence on the street, there’s violence in the father’s workplace. Even the way that the father and daughter communicate - or fail to communicate - turns out to be a sort of violence. It was important to me to keep most of the really brutal elements off screen, not to sensationalise them because that only serves to distance us from what we’re seeing. What matters is the characters’ emotional responses to violence and the effect it has on their relationships. In Mexico, we are going into some sort of civil war now so it’s not surprising that I ended up writing something like this – it happened in a very natural way because I live in a very violent country. But I guess this is pretty much happening everywhere. You can see something like this happening in Norway…it happens in the States… everywhere. AFTER LUCIA (DESPUES DE LUCIA) is my second feature film following DANIEL AND ANA, and although my experience is limited, it still allows me to think that often the most interesting thing in a film isn’t what the director thought he was looking for. Instead, it’s what he discovers over the course of every stage in the process. I’m always on the lookout, trying to breathe life into the things that trouble me and, with any luck, to create something real. Born in Mexico City in 1979 Michel Franco started making short films after his media studies. In 2001, CUANDO SEA GRANDE, made for an anti-corruption campaign, was released in 500 cinemas all over Mexico. In 2003, ENTRE DOS, won the Grand Prize of the Festival of Huesca and received the prize for the Best Short Film at the Festival of Dresden. During this same period, Michel Franco also produced commercials and videos with his production company, Pop Films. In 2009, DANIEL AND ANA, his first feature, was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. The film subsequently participated at a variety of international festivals and was distributed in many territories including Mexico, Spain, France and the US. Praised by the critics DANIEL AND ANA was just as successful with the audience. The screenplay of his second feature AFTER LUCIA was developed with the support of the Cinéfondation de Cannes at the Résidence de la Cinéfondation in spring 2010.
